Ringkasan:

In the Second Commandment, God tells us to worship him in a way that he accepts, not according to our own way. The Second Commandment says that 1) we shall not make a carved image or any likeness; and 2) we shall not bow down to them or serve them.

Why did God give the Second Commandment to Israelites who were brought out of Egypt? Because at that time, the Egyptians worshipped many false gods and these false gods were worshipped as idols. People wanted to see who or what they were worshipping, so they made idols or statues out of wood, stone or metal. But God wanted Israelites to worship Him in a different way from Egyptian’s practice.

From the story in Exodus 32, children learned that Israelites failed to keep God’s commandment. Not that they did not know the true God whom they should worship, but they wanted to worship God in accordance to their own way. They asked Aaron to craft a “God” according to their idea of what God is like. But both “worship of false god” and “false worship of true God” are false worship.

In this current age, we may not necessarily worship a visible statue/image, but we may worship other forms of idols (approval, success, comfort, games, etc.). Moreover, the Bible tells use how we should worship God, that is to worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).

There are learning points that children need to remember:
1. We must not worship God according to our own ideas of what God is like.
2. We must not worship God according to what other people think God is like.
3. We must not add to our worship of God things that he himself has not said in his Word.
4. We must worship God in light of who He is (God is spirit).
5. We must worship God in accordance to His Word and trust in Jesus (who is the truth).
